Exi-tite are proud to have designed and supplied the ventilation for the regeneration project being undertaken at the Grand Hotel – Birmingham

An architectural treasure trove and an integral part of Birminghams building fabric, the Grand Hotel , situated on Colmore Row in the centre of Birmingham has been lovingly restored to befit its former glory.

With the original building constructed in the 1870’s, a 100 bedroom hotel with a restaurant, exhibition space and reception was founded to attract out of town businessmen to the area. In the years to come, extensive refurbishment and expansion, widened its audience to the luxury market.  Attracting such guests as Charlie Chaplin, James Cagney, Winston Churchill, Neville Chamberlin and King George VI.

Finally closing its doors in 2002, the building was Grade II listed in 2004 with plans made in 2012 to restore its former glory.

As well as the grandeur, the hotel has to provide an environment that is not only comfortable, but in doing so is environmentally friendly.

Designed in partnership with Caldwell Consulting and Equipped with the latest in heat recovery  and ventilation technology, guests can relax in the comfort that effective efficient equipment provides.

Containing multiple preparation and storage rooms, the environment in the Grand Hotel basement is maintained with both supply and extract air served by a LMF Flex 130, providing 11628 m3/h and extracting 10980 m3/h.

Supply air is tempered after passing a thermal wheel using 80 kW staged capacity DX application by LG Electronics Multi V S mini VRF solutions.

Confidence in kitchen extract is paramount and using the Helios Gigabox, extracting hot greasy air from kitchens instills confidence.  With a seperated air stream to the motor, failures are averted and maintenance made simple, making it possible to extract air up to 120 degree Celsius.

Extracting air at 20072 m3/h by design using 2 x Gigabox EX710B fans and controllable locally by a fan speed controller.

Supplying air at 15848 m3/h and extracting 1836 m3/hr maintains a clean fresh environment without wasting energy.

Introducing fresh air with heat recovery by thermal wheel the LMF Flex air handling unit provides air flow rates at 14400 m3/h and extracting 12240 m3/h by design.

An air recirculation section allows full climate control by 3 DX circuits to provide both cooling and heating via LG Electronics Multi V S VRF mini solutions with ambient operating ranges down to -20 degree Celsius.

Providing 17496 m3/h of fresh air to the 1st floor kitchen is the Flex 177 AHU by LMF.  Supplied with electric preheat and a 3 stage DX cooling and heating battery using LG Electronics Multi V S mini VRF, this AHU is designed so it continues to operate into the depths of winter.

Providing 11484 m3/h of fresh air to the 1st floor kitchen is the Flex 140 AHU by LMF.  Supplied with electric preheat and a 2 stage DX cooling and heating battery using LG Electronics Multi V S mini VRF, this AHU is designed so it continues to operate into the depths of winter.

A multi function space, the 7th floor provides an array of function rooms for uses such as meetings, seminars and exhibitions.

With a balanced supply and extract provided by LMF Flex 144 at 14004 m3/h, a thermal recovery wheel improves system efficiency and reduces waste energy.

Air circulation is provided to the 7th Floor bedrooms using LMF’s Flex 130.  maintaining a positive pressure across the rooms, the supply air is provided at a rate of 11628 m3/h and extracted at 10980 m3/h. with any potential waste energy recovered using a thermal wheel.

Air is tempered for both cooling and heating using 3 stages of DX provided by LG Electronics Multi V S mini VRF which operates in ambient temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius.

With Vectaire’s Mechanical Heat Recovery, localised ventilation is possible with high rates of energy recover and high operating efficiency.

Extracting from wet rooms or bathrooms is no problem with the capability of removing moist air without issue.

Using Vectaire’s WHHR models provide the perfect solution for bedrooms not served by central plant.
